12/26/07 - Boxkar welcomes Brian Saunders!!

We have a brand new addition to Boxkar! His name is Brian Saunders, and he is our new lead guitar player! He has toured with many National bands including Fastback, Lionel Riche and Dokken, to name a few. He brings an exciting new edge to Boxkar with his professionalism, his incredible chops on guitar and vocal ability. With the addition of Brian, we have a chemistry amongst the guys that brings out the good old, rockin, kick ass Boxkar!! He has the same drive and the same fire that the rest of us have, and that will take the whole show up a notch! We are writing new originals, revamping some of the old ones, adding new cover tunes and stepping up the live shows to a new level!! Make sure to come out and welcome him to the Boxkar community!

08/20/07 - THE DIRT

Here is the latest on the Boxkar boys! The guys are currently on a couple week break. After welcoming their newest and brightest addition, drummer Matt Gieseke, the boys are taking the next few weeks off for some personal time.

"It's funny, we have so much more to do and sometimes you need to rejuvenate. Hang with childhood friends, go to a cottage with family or just decompress watching baseball in our underwear on the couch", says Szebeni.

While the down time is welcomed, that doesn't mean they are idle.

"Bry and I have been writing a lot. Emotions and melodies have been pouring out. It's a revolution-like time."

So are the boys planning a new album?

"I think it's safe to say that we have officially started writing the next album!"

The boys say that there are many irons in the fire, so to speak, but they have just kept quiet.

"We have learned our lessons. We get so excited about opportunities that present themselves that we spill too much info and sometimes people take it and run with it", Szebeni concludes.

As to when and where the new album will be recorded, stay tuned. A NEW BOXKAR ALBUM! HELL YEAH!

One final note: Just because the boys are taking some needed time to write and chill DOESN'T mean they are breaking up! That's for all you gossip folk. For Boxkar nation, keep the love happening!

02/07/07 - CLASSIC ROCK REVIEW

Box of tricks.

A cult favourite in the Classic Rock office, Boxkars latest album might just be the one to get them the major label attention they deserve. Tougher, more dynamic and forceful than the Wisconsin bands previous outings, Comin Out Swingin is full of top-quality, hard-edged pop rock. Chris Szebini has a great rock voice, full of tremulous power and clever intonations, and his partner, rhythm guitarist Bryan Bremer, has supreme songwriting nous. Bristling with ballsy, hooky, mega-melodic, radio-friendly songs, Comin& is nigh on irresistible. From After All (dig that Rosalie-style riff) to Hey! (like Loverboy on steroids) this is superior stuff from start to finish. If youre pissed off at the way Bon Jovi have metamorphosed into conceited stadium rock buffoons, Boxkar could be your salvation. 8/10 Geoff Barton

08/14/06 - "COMIN OUT SWINGING"

The boys have finished tracking the new 11 song album titled "Comin' Out Swinging". The album is produced by Christopher Szebeni and Marc Golde and is currently in the post production phase.

"The band has officially crossed over that line. This is the Boxkar I invisioned from the beginning, the band we all knew they had the potential to be! The good news is, they have a ton more in them!" -Marc Golde, producer.

"We have been in the studio for at least 12 to 14 hours a day for the last three weeks. I can't wait to drop it on the public. In my opinion, it is by far the best the band has ever sounded and features the most prolific songwriting to date." -Chris

"Comin' Out Swinging" is said to be released sometime October. Stay tuned for details of release date and party.

Also, look for a new website supporting the album to be unleashed in concert with the album release date!

05/10/05 - All Access Magazine Reviews Boxkar at Viper Room

Boxkar : By Jim Martyka

Chris Szebini is fed up with modern day music. "There is so much negativity in today's world and that has carried over into popular music, even into an area like rock and roll ... and that sucks," Szebini said. "There are so many bands that look at a flower and see something horrible. Meanwhile, we look at it and go 'dude, there's a yellow flower ... Hey! Hey! Hey!' Come on man, it's rock and roll! It's about having fun and being entertaining!" That's the mission of arena rockers Boxkar, a Wisconsin band fronted by the charismatic Szebini. Backed by a heavy Midwestern following, the five-piece modern day Bon Jovi (as one producer called them) is looking to make some noise out in L.A. and beyond, kicking off with a solid start at a recent show in the legendary Viper Room.

Boxkar is kind of a throwback to a time (not so long ago) when rock was about non-stop partying, flashy frontman, ripping guitarists, simple-yet-catchy tunes, crowds pumping their fists and everyone proud to be having a good time. Two songs into their show and you can't help but get caught up in the vibe. Yeah man, this is arena rock and hell yeah, it's a lot of fun!

Most of the credit should be given to Szebini, who is a true on stage entertainer. Strutting around with a Steven Tyler swagger and Jon Bon Jovi's flair for the dramatic, his presence is second only to his phenomenal voice, which (unlike many of today's rockers) he doesn't need to hide with grumbles, raspy whispers or technological gizmos. The boy can sing!

Though he looks like he came straight from a Weezer rehearsal, axeman Tom Thiel makes the most of his opportunities to shred. Drummer Todd Hellman keeps the groove with precision and bassist Matt Hammen and guitarist Bryan Bremer play their roles perfectly, filling out a sound that showcases everything that is good and pure about Midwestern rock.

Quite simply, Boxkar celebrates the release that rock and roll is supposed to give from everyday life and they do so in addicting fashion. Now sing along ... "Hey! Hey! Hey!"

04/26/05 - BOXKAR TAKES HOME BEST NEW BAND AT WAMI'S

The Wisconsin Area Music Industry celebrated its 25th-annual awards show at the Potawatomi Bingo Casino's Northern Lights Theater Monday night with a party that celebrated the diversity - and the promising future - of the state's many music scenes.

With no one artist dominating, rising stars in hip-hop, country and rock took home awards and put on performances often worthy of a national stage.

Oshkosh band Boxkar, which took home the new group of the year award and already has performed nationally, electrified the crowd with a three-song set early in the evening. Given the group's up-tempo mainstream rock, reminiscent at times of matchbox twenty's punchier fare, and the stage presence of gifted front man Chris Szebeni, expect an easy transition for Boxkar to bigger things.

Boxkar's win was one of several awards that will be heading home to the Fox Valley, arguably the most dominant region of the state during the evening, with a third of the nominations and wins in a number of categories, including folk/acoustic artist, venue, and industry Web site.

04/05/05 - BOXKAR SHOWCASES AT FAMED VIPER ROOM

On April 20th, 4 pm, Wisconsin's own Boxkar has been asked to perform at the well-known L.A. music venue The Viper Room on Sunset Strip. Some of the performers who have played there lately include Matchbox Twenty, Counting Crows, Black Crowes, STP, Tom Petty, Sheryl Crow...etc.

Some of the most recognized record labels and management firms in the world have confirmed their attendance to watch Boxkar put on a 40 minute power set. This coming off their impressive start to 2005 in Washington D.C..

02/09/05 - Boxkar nominated for two WAMI's…

Boxkar is nominated for two WAMI's (Wisconsin Grammy's). Nominations are for BEST NEW GROUP and SONG OF THE YEAR("Let down"). Boxkar has also been chosen to perform at the awards show in in April. Boxkar would like to thank Wisconsin for their continued support.

01/13/05 - Boxkar gets boarding pass to Washington D.C.

By Jeff Potts of The Northwestern

It takes some pretty big names to warm up an audience at the inauguration of the 55th President of the United States.

During three days of events acts like Kid Rock, Hilary Duff, JoJo and Boxkar will entertain thousands.

Boxkar?

Aren’t they just a band from Oshkosh without a record label?

“It’s almost unbelievable,” said vocalist Chris Szebini of being picked to perform twice as part of the official inaugural events next week. “It’s weird. When you go for a dream and imagine how you go about getting on the national scene, you never in a million years expect this to be one of the angles to get there. It’s pretty cool. We’re the only unsigned band performing.”

Boxkar’s boarding ticket from Oshkosh to Washington D.C. began in October when they were asked to perform at President George Bush’s campaign stop at Wittman Regional Airport. They got the call again to perform at his campaign stops in Green Bay and Milwaukee, where they got bumped by Brooks & Dunn.

Their music impressed someone in the Bush camp—not only were they asked for a business card to be contacted about a possible inauguration gig, but also received a compliment directly from the President.

“He said we sounded great,” recalled Szebini of a private meeting with the President and First Lady. “I gave him one of our CDs.”

The CD may have found it’s way into the hands of the President’s daughter, Barbara, who helped select the acts performing during Tuesday’s youth-orientated “America’s Future Rocks Today” concert, which will be headlined by Kid Rock.

While that concert will draw and estimated audience of 10,000 people, the stakes will be raised on Wednesday when Boxkar takes the only stage at the “A Celebration of Freedom” event, which may draw more than 70,000 people.

Formed in 2001 with the recording of “Rockstar Weekend,” Boxkar’s intent has always been to break into the national music scene.

Going against the industry norm, the band has been patient enough to not sell their creative soul to the first slick record producer to come calling, although there have been offers said Szebini.

Their approach revolves around hard rocking live performances, thoughtful song writing, and knowing it takes more than talent but hard work to achieve success.

Rounding out the band are Bryan Bremer on guitar, Matt Hammen on bass, Tom Thiel on guitar and Todd Hellman on Drums.

In addition to “Rockstar Weekend” and their self-titled album, their song “All About Me” is included on “The Best of Mill Creek Blues” compilation, which highlights the best acts from around the region.

They’ll be back in Oshkosh for a show at the French Quarter on Feb. 5.

As for finally signing a major record deal, Szebini said for right now they are just going to enjoy the high profile gigs in Washington D.C. and trust in their approach of waiting for the right offer to come along.

“If it’s in the cards for us to go national, it’s going to happen,” he said. “We just have to wait and see.”

01/13/05 - Performers for Bush's big week

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON -- Former "Frazier" star Kelsey Grammar, teen idol Hillary Duff, singer Gloria Estefan and 2003 "American Idol" winner Ruben Studdard are among the headline entertainers for President Bush's inauguration.

From a youth concert to festivities on the National Mall to the nine official inaugural balls, the Presidential Inaugural Committee selected several actors, musicians and celebrities to entertain the thousands expected to attend. The committee released its list Thursday.

For the "America's Future Rocks Today" concert on Tuesday, pop singers JoJo and Duff will perform along with Studdard, the bands 3 Doors Down and Boxkar and former football player Jason Sehorn, who with his wife, actress Angie Harmon, spoke at the Republican National Convention.

Performers at the nine inaugural balls, ranging from the free commander in chief ball for troops and their families to the $150-per-ticket parties, vary from the Guy Lombardo Orchestra and the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra to Beatlemania Live, comedian Ben Stein and the Will Gravitt Band.

10/21/04 - Bush gives Boxkar big break

By Jeff Potts of The Northwestern

They knew October could be the month the band went from regional to national, but the members of Oshkosh’s Boxkar could never have expected this.

Lead singer Chris Szebini and guitarist Bryan Bremer spent the past week in Los Angeles meeting with record label executives and management agencies in the hope of landing that elusive national recording contract.

Suddenly their phone rang. It was an offer for a gig back in Oshkosh.

But what gig would be worth canceling the rest of the meetings with the very people who could ensure fame and fortune?

Try opening up for the president of the United States.

“This is just crazy,” Szebini said. “I’m never been more excited to play a show in my life.”

Boxkar will warm up the audience for today’s campaign stop by President Bush at Wittman Regional Airport with a set of original music prior to his appearance.

“Love him or hate him he’s still the leader of the free world,” Szebini said. “It’s quite an honor.”

And an opportunity nobody in the band was willing to pass up. After all, when they get back to Los Angeles adding this gig to their resume certainly will catch some eyes.

09/07/04 - Boxkar Welcomes New Guitarist Tom Theil…

Of course finding a new guitarist to replace Joe Perz is not an easy task. However, it was an obvious choice for Boxkar to have the much respected, hot handed guitarist and vocalist Tom Theil join in their drive to success.

Tom Theil is from the valley and has had many years performing in studios and stages across the country. There was no doubt that if Boxkar could get the interest of Tom they would not miss a beat. Tom was very excited about the opportunity to play with a band that has a real shot and jumped at the opportunity.

"He is simply an amazing musician and a complete package. His guitar chops are almost stupid and his voice powers above mine to give a powerful one-two punch up front. We are extremely happy to have him. He will definately add a different dimension to the band that I can't wait to show off to everyone!" -chris

Boxkar has been working very hard on their new show with Tom consisting of brand new songs as they start to write for their new album. The new show featuring Tom Theil will start on Saturday September 11 at Sluggers in Appleton.

"Welcome Tom to the family and dream!" -Todd, Matt, Chris, Bryan and fans.

08/16/04 - Bye to a great musician and a great friend…

Well, as usual in any group, organization and/or business, the face of Boxkar will be going through a slight change.

Joe Perz, guitarist since 2001, will be taking a different direction in life given his newly born beautiful baby girl.

Joe Perz loves Boxkar and grew as a musician and as a person. In return, Boxkar grew as a band and as brothers with the special gifts Joe braught to the table.

"We will miss Joey like crazy. His talent is awesome, his bantor witty, his calmness needed. You can always find another guitarist and singer and not miss a beat, but we will never find another Joe Perz. We love you Joe, and we will always consider you our guitarist, moreover, our best friend". -Chris

Joe Perz last home show is Mill Creek Blues on Friday August 20th. He will play Kenosha/Chi Town on that Saturday and finish his stint at the Harbor Bar in Waupaca.

"Thank you Joe for your passion, your friendship and your musical gifts. We will miss you a ton". -Bryan, Chris, Todd, Matt (Two-Tone) Hammen and FANS.

03/04/04 - Boxkar Looking For Success on a National Scale

By Eric Klister Post-Crescent staff writer

Lesson No. 1 for local bands: If you want to have any shot at making it to the big time, you first have to believe that you actually will make it to the big time.

So you’ll excuse Chris Szebeni for speaking with conviction when he talks about his band, the Fox Valley-based Boxkar, which performs Saturday at Mill Creek Blues Cafe in Appleton.

“I cannot imagine a band being in a better position in Wisconsin to be signed as us,” the vocalist said. “And I know it’s a bold statement, but as far as where I see the industry going and what I’ve heard, how people have talked about us and how hard we’ve worked, which is really the bottom line, we’re poised to do it. There’s a reason why you’re asked to open up for Third Eye Blind and Everclear and the BoDeans in front of 9,000 people. There’s just got to be a reason, and it feels right. It’s gonna come around.”

Don’t misunderstand. Szebeni isn’t an arrogant guy; he’s just that passionate about his band.

With the release of a new self-titled album, Boxkar — Szebeni on vocals, Matt Hammen on bass, Bryan Bremer and Joe Perz on guitars and Todd Hellman on drums — is undoubtedly looking ahead to bigger things.

Recorded at Rock Garden Studios in Appleton, Boxkar’s new album features 11 songs that Szebeni says put the band’s best foot forward. The songs are chock full of meat-and-potatoes Midwestern roots rock riffs and sing-along melodies that would easily be at home on the radio alongside bands such as matchbox twenty and the Goo Goo Dolls.

The album was co-produced by Marc Golde and Szebeni. The goal was to create an album that could essentially be repackaged and put on record store shelves.

“We feel completely comfortable walking into any record label in the country now and giving them just this album,” Szebeni said. “If a record label signs us, they’re going to be signing us accurately because this is accurately who we are now.”

The album certainly sounds like it could appeal to the masses. Musically, the sounds of tube amplifiers, vintage guitars and big drums come through loud and proud. Lyrically, much of the subject matter is easily relatable, frequently conveying the time-tested emotions of love and loss. But unlike a lot of bands that endlessly rant about how terrible their lives are and leave it at that, Boxkar’s songs always see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Szebeni describes it as recreating the feel of good-time ’80s rock ’n’ roll, only without the big hair and cheesiness. In fact, the band has been described as a modern Bon Jovi.

“Instead of what I hear a lot on the radio, just talking about those broken times and how that sucks, our (songs) are like, ‘You know what? The most broken, most vulnerable times you have in life are the best times in life because if you’re in that vulnerable experience and you actually reflect upon it, you’ll come out of it … a better person and knowing yourself that much better,’” Szebeni said.

In just a few years, Boxkar already has established a solid reputation as a live band, evidenced by its shows opening for big-name acts such as the BoDeans and Third Eye Blind, as well as festivals such as Summerfest.

The next step now is to find the right record label. The group already has been approached by one label, but while many bands would jump at the first opportunity to sign a deal, Boxkar is waiting for the right offer.

Part of that process means having a keen eye for the business side of music, whether it’s having the right photo, the right Web site design or understanding how to properly market the band.

“Unfortunately, some people call that selling out,” Szebeni said. “I call that people who are serious about living and breathing music as a dream, as an occupation, as a love, as a sustaining thing in your life.”

12/03/03 - Boxkar welcomes Todd Hellman to the family…

Todd Hellman, long time friend of Chris Szebeni, has been admired from a distance by Chris and many others throughout Wisconsin for several years. Todd started playing at the age of five. His professionalism and drive also matches that of the band, which makes him an exciting addition to Boxkar.
